== Summary ==

Sudanese popular song here denotes the modern sung ensemble field strongly associated with Greater Khartoum and the central Nile, including its evolving orchestral and electronically arranged forms. It is a practical repertoire umbrella rather than a claim that Sudan has one national sound. Regional and language-based traditions, Haqeeba, women's song, Sudanese jazz and newer dance music retain their own histories even where musicians and audiences overlap. <ref name="africa2026-sd-handbook">[https://riftvalley.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/RVI-The-Sudan-Handbook.pdf Ahmad Sikainga, A Short History of Sudanese Popular Music, The Sudan Handbook (2011),242–253]. War since 2023 has transformed the institutions and locations of performance. Mohamed Gamal's 2025 reporting follows Amr Omar and Kenan rebuilding wedding and café work among displaced Sudanese in Cairo/Giza. Their accounts describe professional continuity under difficult conditions, including access to permission to work. This is a present musical public with older and newer repertories, not merely an overseas audience remembering a vanished culture. <ref name="africa2026-sd-cairo2025">[https://qantara.de/en/article/sudanese-music-cairo-finding-joy-face-war Mohamed Gamal, Sudanese music in Cairo: Finding joy in the face of war, Qantara,21 July2025]. == History ==

Ahmad Sikainga situates modern urban music in migration, slavery and emancipation, military-band training and social spaces made by marginalized residents as well as educated elites. The expansion from Haqeeba-era vocal practice into larger instrumental arrangements is part of that changing urban world. Radio helped circulate it beyond the capital, while regional musicians also brought other musical resources into the center. <ref name="africa2026-sd-handbook" />

The scope includes composed songs in which melody, poetic language and a leading singer interact with arranged accompaniment. Large ensembles and smaller keyboard-centered settings imply different balances of instrumental and vocal labor. These are changing practices within a broad field, not a fixed checklist. The Khartoum heritage project's account of jazz, Zannig and rap also shows why a generic national-pop category should not absorb every urban experiment. <ref name="africa2026-sd-handbook" /> <ref name="africa2026-sd-sound-khartoum">[https://www.sslh.info/en/posts/sound-of-khartoum Sound of Khartoum, Studio Urban]. The main fields follow the central Nile's connected urban and social networks, with reduced reach toward other regional publics. A separate modest Cairo/Giza field recognizes a specifically documented displaced Sudanese scene. Khartoum/Omdurman remains a historical and cultural center; its map field must not be read as an assertion that prewar venues, populations or performance schedules remain intact. The broad national fields express circulation rather than uniform cultural ownership. <ref name="africa2026-sd-cairo2025" />

Jaglara names the distinctive electronic sound associated with Jantra in Ostinato’s account of his rural eastern Sudanese practice. The label describes its own role in reconstructing the recordings and presents Jantra as an individual innovator. This is significant contemporary musical context, but it does not establish a nationwide or independently shared Jaglara genre. No separate geographic field is inferred from one artist’s location. <ref name="africa2026-sd-jaglara">[https://ostinatorecords.bandcamp.com/album/synthesized-sudan-astro-nubian-electronic-jaglara-dance-sounds-from-the-fashaga-underground Synthesized Sudan — geographic and production notes]. Mohammed Wardi, Mohammed al-Amin and other major twentieth-century singers belong to the historical repertoire; their continued cultural presence is different from present personal activity. Amr Omar and Kenan provide documented contemporary cases of professional singing after displacement. Mohamed Adam's research and creative work, meanwhile, challenges the disproportionate central-media visibility of some styles by making western regional resources audible. <ref name="africa2026-sd-handbook" /> <ref name="africa2026-sd-cairo2025" /> <ref name="africa2026-sd-goethe-hajouri">[https://www.goethe.de/prj/ruy/en/dos/mim/26810756.html Mirath:Music — Mohamed Adam, Sasa (Hajouri)]. Central Nile musical institutions and song publics form the principal connected core. Lower national reach coexists with distinct Darfur, Kordofan, eastern and other repertories. The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
