== History ==

Famo’s development connects migrant labour, urban social venues and Sesotho narrative practice. Accordion and concertina-based ensembles became important vehicles for popular expression across the border. <ref name="africa2026-ls-national-university" />

== Musical characteristics ==

Extended narrative and declamatory singing interact with repeating instrumental accompaniment. Ensemble resources vary; lyrical voice and social address are as important as the presence of an accordion. <ref name="africa2026-ls-famo" /> <ref name="africa2026-ls-traditional" />

Lesotho and contiguous Sesotho South African communities. Free State/Gauteng and mine/urban migrant circuits, with specific radio and diaspora publics. Fields distinguish the community heartland from specifically documented wider use; political borders and population totals do not determine intensity.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
