== Summary ==

Puxa is a Santomean popular dance-band genre developed through the conjuntos. Local melodic and linguistic practice interacts with several Atlantic musical resources, producing a field distinct from a generic Congolese Rumba or Angolan Semba category. <ref name="africa2026-st-bialoborska-article">[https://scielo.pt/pdf/cea/n32/n32a06.pdf Magdalena Bialoborska, Vungu Téla. == Contemporary and trending ==

The conjunto legacy remains part of contemporary Santomean professional identity. In 2025 Bill Lima described continuing work with África Negra and other bands alongside a separate Bulawê project. That versatility illustrates a connected musical world without assigning every performance by those musicians to Puxa. <ref name="africa2026-st-bulawe-lima2025">[https://rstp.st/2025/06/30/bill-lima-cria-1o-grupo-de-bulawe-na-diaspora-para-ser-reconhecido-internacionalmente/ Kemilson D’Almeida, Bill Lima cria1º grupo de bulawê na diáspora para ser reconhecido internacionalmente, RSTP,30 June2025]. == History ==

Bialoborska distinguishes locally created conjunto genres from earlier social repertoires and later computer-based production. Puxa developed through changing acoustic/electric ensembles rather than simply copying one foreign style. Os Leonenses and Sangazuza belong to the wider formation alongside África Negra. <ref name="africa2026-st-bialoborska-article" /> <ref name="africa2026-st-puxa-context2022" />

== Musical characteristics ==

Bass, interlocking guitars, drums/percussion and collective vocal work support sustained dancing. Forro melodic and textual practices interact with resources including Semba, Coladeira and Congolese guitar music. The mixture varies across bands; one arrangement does not define every conjunto genre. <ref name="africa2026-st-puxa-context2022" />

== Geography and communities ==

São Tomé’s towns, communities and professional networks provide the main connected landscape. Conjunto circulation also links Príncipe and Santomean migrant publics. International tours extend public visibility without giving every tour destination the same depth as the islands. <ref name="africa2026-st-puxa-context2022" /> <ref name="africa2026-st-bialoborska-thesis">[https://repositorio.iscte-iul.pt/bitstream/10071/25201/1/phd_mgdalena_anna__bialoborska.pdf Music and society in São Tomé — Magdalena Bialoborska doctoral study]. Access note: Relevant indexed local ensemble/practice passages read; full thesis not claimed.</ref>

== Artists ==

África Negra, Os Leonenses and Sangazuza illustrate distinct band histories. Bill Lima’s 2025 testimony documents the continuing work of a professional musician across these broader island networks. Band identity, a genre and an individual career remain related but different categories. <ref name="africa2026-st-puxa-context2022" /> <ref name="africa2026-st-bulawe-lima2025" />

Socopé and locally named Santomean Rumba are different repertoire categories within the ensemble environment. Semba, Soukous and Coladeira illuminate particular exchanges without exhausting Puxa’s local authorship. <ref name="africa2026-st-bialoborska-article" /> <ref name="africa2026-st-puxa-context2022" />

Connected São Tomé popular-band depth and lower Príncipe circulation. Modern ensemble identity is specific; touring and historical influence do not imply equal depth across foreign countries.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
