== Summary ==

Algerian Diwan is a differentiated field of Afro-Maghrebi music and ritual practice shaped by trans-Saharan displacement, slavery and subsequent community formation. Its western Sidi Bilal traditions and eastern Sidi Merzug-related practices have substantial musical and social differences. The shared label should open those distinctions rather than imply one uniform Algerian ritual sound. <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2023">[https://asjp.cerist.dz/en/article/240906 Tamara Dee Turner, Black Music in the Maghrib: Communities, Practices, and Performance beyond Rouanet, Turath1(2),2023,107-122]. Tamara Dee Turner's fieldwork spanning 2013–2022 identifies multiple continuing schools and practices, challenging a narrow inherited account of the genre. Concert presentation also has its own public: DzFest's 2025 London programme presents Gaâda Diwane Béchar as an ensemble reworking Saharan heritage. The programme documents that particular creative positioning and event, rather than the scale of everyday ritual practice or a general British audience. <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2023" /> <ref name="africa2026-dz-diwan-dzfest2025">[https://dzfest.com/dzfest-2025-programme DzFest2025, From the Edge of the Sahara: Gaada Diwane Bechar programme]. == History ==

Diwan histories connect people from several sub-Saharan language worlds with changing North African religious and social institutions. Turner's work traces Hausa-associated song suites while examining the different meanings practitioners now give these connections. Musical continuity can coexist with lost or transformed verbal understanding. A single ethnic-origin story would therefore misrepresent both movement and subsequent local creativity. <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2021" />

== Musical characteristics ==

In western practice, the ginbri lute, vocal repertoire and collective ritual organization are important. Eastern forms described by Turner emphasize percussion and more individually focused musical diagnosis, with connections to Neshra. In the Sidi Bilal repertoire, a recognizable principal melodic theme helps identify a piece despite variable names or interpretations of words. These distinctions are part of the definition, not minor deviations from one compulsory instrumentation. <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2023" /> <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2021" />

== Geography and communities ==

The map distinguishes a Béchar-connected western Saharan landscape, a lighter northwestern/central Algerian network and a modest eastern field. The eastern field represents a different practice family under the broad label; it is not an assertion of a lute-centered rite throughout the northeast. The low broad values acknowledge concentrated community use, with a less certain internal distribution than a mapped census could provide. <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2023" /> <ref name="africa2026-dz-diwan-dzfest2025" />

Gaâda Diwane Béchar supplies a documented presentational ensemble example. Turner's ethnography also centers ritual musicians, participants and relationships of care, whose musical labor cannot be reduced to a festival act. Her concept of social warmth, hal, concerns how a community understands and experiences ritual work; it is not a claim that a musical procedure has demonstrated medical efficacy. <ref name="africa2026-dz-diwan-dzfest2025" /> <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2017">[https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/studentTheses/algerian-d%C4%ABw%C4%81n-of-s%C4%ABd%C4%AB-bil%C4%81l/ Tamara Dee Turner, Algerian diwan of Sidi Bilal: music, trance, and affect in popular Islam, King’s College London PhD,2017]. [[Gnawa]] and [[Stambeli]] provide related Maghrebi histories with their own institutions and repertories. Eastern Sidi Merzug/Neshra connections further complicate a simple three-country equivalence. The category is retained here as a differentiated Algerian musical field, with the distinct eastern and western forms explicitly named rather than collapsed into one generic trance genre. <ref name="africa2026-dz-turner2023" />

Western Saharan/Béchar, northwestern-central and eastern Algerian practices require separate fields and descriptions. These are concentrated ritual/community networks; the broad low eastern field is deliberately less precise than a claim to identify every local practitioner setting.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
