== Summary ==

Zanig, also transcribed Zannig, is a keyboard-led Sudanese dance-music field associated with Greater Khartoum's working-class party and youth circuits. == Contemporary and trending ==

A 2026 report drawing on prewar encounters describes movement from private parties into recognized venues and wedding performance. It also follows musicians' displacement toward other Sudanese towns and Cairo. Publication date and the date of the observed scene must be distinguished. <ref name="africa2026-sd-zanig-field" />

== History ==

The Khartoum heritage project's practitioner-centered account places Zannig beside jazz and rap as music facing stigma and unequal institutional recognition. Alternative platforms helped change their standing. The research treats these musical worlds as consequential cultural production, with class and authority affecting whose work was publicly legitimized. <ref name="africa2026-sd-sound-khartoum">[https://www.sslh.info/en/posts/sound-of-khartoum Sound of Khartoum, Studio Urban]. == Musical characteristics ==

Keyboard timbre and patterning organize dance energy. Practitioner classifications differ: Adeel Colour favors a narrow Technics 2000 definition, while Mohamed Osman discusses newer keyboards and singers. Their disagreement is part of the history of the label, rather than a universal technical rule. <ref name="africa2026-sd-zanig-field" />

== Geography and communities ==

The main field represents Greater Khartoum's cultural heartland. Lower eastern Sudanese and Cairo fields acknowledge reported circulation and displacement. They describe musical networks; they cannot certify that prewar venues or populations remain unchanged. <ref name="africa2026-sd-zanig-field" />

== Artists ==

Nigeri figures prominently in the account of wider visibility. Mohamed Osman, Hiba Jabrah and Tasso represent different keyboard, vocal and wedding-performance roles in its prewar material. <ref name="africa2026-sd-zanig-field" />

== Related genres ==

[[Sudanese popular song]], [[Sudanese jazz]] and rap provide neighboring urban histories. The heritage project's comparison concerns changing class relationships and recognition as well as music. Shared platforms do not make these sounds interchangeable or place them in one inevitable evolutionary sequence. <ref name="africa2026-sd-sound-khartoum" />
