Contemporary and trending
Spirit of Praise and Dumi Mkokstad offer different contemporary entry points: a large ensemble/platform connecting lead singers and a recognised solo voice. Joyous Celebration remains an important reference for the commercially recorded choir tradition, even where a particular video is unavailable for embedding. Local-language praise and performance networks give these projects their setting.

History
South African gospel developed through church, hymn, choir and local popular-music histories. Indigenous-language sacred singing, mission institutions, urban choral practice and commercial recording have interacted over time. African American gospel is one important influence, but South African gospel is not simply that repertoire played at a different latitude.

Musical characteristics
Interlocking choral parts, lead calls, dance and praise-band backing; different languages and denominational practices remain audible. Compare the lead voice with the ensemble response, the rhythmic backing with the phrasing of the text, and the difference between a communal refrain and an individually directed performance. The recordings below are particular examples, not a complete inventory of the category.

Geography and communities
South African gospel is a substantial commercial, choral, family and congregational music world, not a small church-only niche. The northern/Highveld and KwaZulu-Natal landscapes are strongly connected to national recording, Zionist/clap-and-tap, choir and concert networks. Eastern Cape communities and the southwest Cape have distinct configurations and need their own broad fields rather than a single deep national dome. Rural and township connections remain continuous. These landscapes express a strong participant in a plural musical economy alongside amapiano, house, kwaito, maskanda, regional pop and other repertoires; they do not assert that gospel exceeds all secular listening combined. Cross-border Sotho and related circulation does not erase recording-level locality.

Artists
Spirit of Praise with Zaza Mokhethi and Kgomotso, Dumi Mkokstad, Spirit of Praise with Neyi Zimu. The selections below identify specific works and versions rather than assigning the entire output of an artist to this category. Uploader credits are explicitly labelled when the source does not securely identify every performer. A concert, choir video and studio release may represent different parts of the same scene.

Representative performances
Original repertoire dates, recording dates and video-publication dates describe different events. Unknown dates remain unknown. Historical examples are retained for reference and excluded from geographic autoplay.

Gospel is the parent overview and links to the other regional/style categories. Isicathamiya, Zulu traditional music, Zimbabwean gospel and Gospel are useful comparisons where their identities are actually relevant. A choir, vocal language or shared performer is not enough by itself to classify a recording as one of these forms.
