== Summary ==
Occitan folk is a family of songs, dances and instrumental practices connected with the Occitan-speaking cultural space. Gascon rondeaux, Languedoc singing, Béarn vocal traditions and other local repertories belong within it without sounding identical. The category is linguistic and cultural as well as musical; it should not imply one standard southern French folk band. Performance can center on dancing, shared singing or close listening. Local names, dialects and instruments carry particular histories, while contemporary musicians also use this inherited knowledge to make new work. <ref name="ge-occitan">[https://www.occitanica.eu/items/show/20991 COMDT documentary collections, Occitanica].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
The music continues through bals, cantadas, workshops, local associations, archives and professional groups. COMDT's teaching combines instrumental, vocal and dance knowledge, showing how transmission links activities often separated in a commercial genre list. Younger musicians can learn from field recordings and direct encounters with older performers, then compose or arrange for current audiences. Amplification and new ensemble combinations are part of this scene, but so are unaccompanied communal songs. Its living character lies in recurring social practice rather than a requirement that every presentation resemble a historical reconstruction. <ref name="further-1">[https://www.comdt.org/transmission/les-cours/ Courses and transmission — Centre Occitan des Musiques et Danses Traditionnelles].</ref>

== History ==
Local oral repertories developed through work, celebration, dance and religious life across a broad and internally diverse area. Language shift and social transformation altered their transmission, while collecting and revival movements brought material into new institutions and performance settings. Cultural and linguistic activism helped make some practices newly visible, but the relationship between identity and repertory remains varied. Archive collections from Toulouse and surrounding regions record not only tunes but voices, circumstances and local terminology. This history is better understood as adaptation across communities than as one forgotten medieval music suddenly rediscovered in modernity. <ref name="further-1" />

== Musical characteristics ==
Dance organizes much of the instrumental repertoire: a rondeau requires a particular relation between phrase, accent and movement, and is not simply any tune played in a circle. Instruments vary regionally, including diatonic accordion, fiddle, local oboes and the Gascon boha bagpipe. Solo song and multipart singing create different textures, with language and verbal rhythm central to the phrase. Listen for how a repeated musical unit supports either dancers or changing verses. A small ensemble's rhythmic cohesion can matter more than its size, and local style may remain audible through very contemporary arrangements.

== Geography and communities ==
The useful landscape is an extended southern French cultural belt rather than isolated Toulouse, Pau and Montpellier dots. Gascony and neighboring southwestern communities form one connected world, while Languedoc and adjacent areas supply related but distinct repertories. Two overlapping broad fields approximate this elongated geography better than a small circle at every venue. Rural spaces between famous towns should remain strong where dance and singing networks connect them. The map is an editorial first pass across varied practices, not a declaration that everyone inside speaks Occitan or that administrative borders define musical belonging.

== Artists ==
Perlinpinpin Fòlc, La Talvera and Nadau offer different pathways into instrumental, collecting and song-based practice. Massilia Sound System and other contemporary acts reveal another creative relationship with Occitan language, but should not replace attention to traditional dancers and singers. Community cantada participants and local instrumental teachers are representative practitioners in their own right. Comparing a field recording, a bal ensemble and an amplified song helps identify which relationships to melody, text and movement continue across settings. The range is part of the subject, not evidence that one of those performances must be excluded as insufficiently traditional.

Occitan practices connect with Basque, Catalan and wider French dance and song worlds through borderland exchange, musicians and shared events. Bal folk is a useful performance circuit but includes repertories beyond Occitan traditions. Chanson and contemporary regional pop can share performers while foregrounding a different relationship between authored text and audience. For discovery, follow one dance or instrument across local styles, then contrast it with communal singing. That sequence makes the area's musical diversity audible without reducing it to a single regional accent layered over generic folk accompaniment.

The elongated Occitan landscape contains connected southwestern/Gascon and Languedoc worlds, with shared teaching and dance networks across smaller towns and countryside. Two broad overlapping fields represent that geography more usefully than the legacy urban inventory, while retaining internal variety rather than treating language space as a uniform genre.

These fields are editorial illustrations of musical affinity and cultural reach, not listener statistics. Radius marks the zero edge of the fade; overlapping fields of this genre combine by maximum.
