== Summary ==
Sacred Harp is a participatory unaccompanied singing tradition centered on a named shape-note songbook and the communities that gather to sing from it. The term does not refer to a harp instrument. Singers usually face inward in a hollow square, with each voice part occupying a side and participants taking turns leading. The sound can be forceful, open and physically immersive. Its purpose is primarily collective singing rather than performance for a separate audience, though visitors may listen. The book, practice and social relationships together define the tradition more clearly than a single vocal timbre.

== Contemporary and trending ==
Regular local singings, annual conventions, teaching and travel sustain the music. Longstanding southern communities coexist with substantial adopted groups elsewhere in North America and overseas. Participants bring different religious and personal relationships to a repertoire whose texts are largely Christian. Newcomers can learn through participation rather than needing a professional choral audition. Changes of book edition and new compositions also show that continuity is an active choice, not the absence of change. The living network includes social meals, repeated meetings and reciprocal visits as well as the hours spent singing.

== History ==
Shape-note notation grew within singing-school and sacred-song histories, helping learners connect written shapes with sung syllables. The Sacred Harp, first published in 1844, became one enduring center within a wider field of shape-note books. Southern families, conventions and teachers sustained different lines of practice, including Black singing communities that a simplified white-only history can obscure. Later travelers, recordings and teaching helped create new adopted groups. The result is both a deep regional tradition and a network capable of welcoming people far from its historical heartland. <ref name="fasola-history">[https://fasola.org/introduction/short_history.html Sacred Harp Musical Heritage Association — A Short Shaped-Note Singing History].</ref> <ref name="ga-sacred-harp">[https://blogs.loc.gov/folklife/2023/10/new-research-guide-shape-note-and-sacred-harp-traditions/ Shape-Note and Sacred Harp Traditions — Library of Congress].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==
Before singing the text, a group commonly sings the notes using the associated syllables. Each part can have an active melodic shape rather than simply supporting a tune placed permanently at the top. The tenor frequently carries the principal melody, while trebles, altos and basses contribute a strongly interlocking texture. Leaders mark time from the center, changing with the chosen song. Listen for the density of voices facing one another and the energy generated by coordinated entries. The sound is intentionally different from a blended concert choir directed toward a distant audience.

== Geography and communities ==
Alabama, Georgia and connected southern communities form a broad historical and living core, not merely a few annual-convention sites. North American adopted singing networks are substantial in northeastern and Great Lakes regions, with a separate Pacific presence. Britain, Ireland and continental European groups create additional connected worlds through visits and teaching. The map uses broad fields to represent these networks while keeping their varying intensity visible. A listed singing is evidence of participation, not a measured number of listeners, and a small adopted group should not automatically become a strong mushroom equal to the southern heartland.

== Artists ==
This is a collective practice, so a celebrity list would be a poor guide. Singers and teachers in longstanding southern families, convention communities and the groups maintaining the Colored Sacred Harp tradition provide important entry points. Published tune names and repeated communal performances can be more useful listening references than a commercial lead artist. Historical recordings and newer convention recordings reveal different local balances. When listening, follow one voice part through several verses, then return to the entire square; the relation between individual participation and the collective sound is central to the experience. <ref name="fasola-practice">[https://fasola.org/hollowsquare/ Sacred Harp Musical Heritage Association — The Hollow Square].</ref>

[[Gospel]] and [[Spirituals]] provide nearby sacred-music histories with different repertoires and social organization. Broader shape-note singing includes other songbooks and both four-shape and seven-shape systems, so Sacred Harp should not stand for every such tradition. Choral performance offers a useful comparison but does not explain away this practice's inward-facing, rotating-leadership character or its community purpose. <ref name="fasola-world">[https://www.fasola.org/singings/ Sacred Harp Musical Heritage Association — Singings].</ref>

Sacred Harp connects a southern convention/community heartland to sustained adopted singing networks.
