== Summary ==
Basque folk is a broad family of instrumental dance music, singing and community performance across the Basque-speaking cultural landscape. Its sounds include the txistu pipe and drum, trikitixa accordion, alboka and txalaparta, alongside unaccompanied or arranged song. No single instrument defines every locality. Basque-language expression, local festivities and the work of musicians adapting inherited material connect the family. The category should therefore introduce several related practices rather than suggest one fixed traditional band or a repertory shared identically throughout the territory. <ref name="ge-basque">[https://basqueculture.eus/en/the-land-of-basque/music Basque music, Etxepare Basque Institute].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Traditional practices continue through romerías, dance associations, instrument teaching, community celebrations and professional performances. Trikitixa duos remain recognizable while bands combine accordion with rock, pop and other instrumentation. Contemporary Basque song can draw on oral poetry or older melody without becoming an archival reconstruction. Institutional projects and international exchanges help circulate these practices, but participation remains rooted in local networks. The useful contemporary question is how a musician relates a chosen repertoire to language, dancers and listeners, not simply whether an electric instrument appears. <ref name="further-1">[https://www.etxepare.eus/media/uploads/landings/relacionados/190716_basque_artists_in_scotland_-_press_kit.pdf Basque artists in Scotland — Etxepare Basque Institute].</ref>

== History ==
Different repertories have different histories. The relatively recent arrival and adoption of the diatonic accordion demonstrates that an instrument can become deeply local through use rather than antiquity. Twentieth-century cultural renewal, language activism and new authored song changed public performance and recording. Ensembles and soloists also recovered or reinterpreted instruments that had become less visible. An account that labels every familiar sound ancient misses these creative processes. Basque communities have repeatedly incorporated new possibilities while debating how a performance should relate to collective memory and contemporary life. <ref name="further-1" />

== Musical characteristics ==
The txistu's combination with a small drum links melody and pulse in one player's practice. Trikitixa commonly pairs a diatonic button accordion with pandero percussion; changes of bellows direction contribute articulation as well as pitch choice. Txalaparta players construct interdependent patterns through coordinated strikes, while alboka supplies a striking reed timbre. Song may foreground a composed poetic text or a collectively remembered melody. Listen for the difference between a tune supporting social dance and an arrangement designed for seated attention: the same instrument can serve either purpose through changes in phrasing and interaction.

== Geography and communities ==
The landscape spans connected rural and urban communities on both sides of the Spanish–French border, with varying strength by instrument and repertoire. Gipuzkoa's accordion circuits, Bizkaia's communities and northern Basque song cannot be reduced to three capital-city peaks. A broad field centered within the cultural region keeps smaller towns and the country between them audible on the map. It should fade outside that landscape rather than follow a precise administrative line. Diaspora organizations matter, but a first-pass core is more useful than scattering weak circles at every overseas association.

== Artists ==
Joseba Tapia and Leturia are useful references for trikitixa performance; Kepa Junkera illustrates an expanded instrumental concert approach. Mikel Laboa and Benito Lertxundi open different paths into Basque authored song, while Kalakan foregrounds voice and percussion. Korrontzi demonstrates how accordion-centered music can circulate internationally. These are complementary entry points rather than a popularity ranking. Local dance musicians, instrument makers and amateur singers provide much of the continuity that a touring artist list cannot capture, and their practices help explain why particular sounds carry such strong cultural associations.

== Related genres ==
Basque folk shares social and geographic space with neighboring Gascon and wider Iberian traditions without losing its own linguistic and instrumental histories. Bertsolaritza, improvised Basque verse performance, is closely connected to musical culture but should not be flattened into generic folk song. Rock and pop in Basque can express cultural identity through quite different musical languages. For discovery, compare a trikitixa duo, an unaccompanied song and a txalaparta performance: their relationship lies in community practice and cultural conversation rather than an identical beat or ensemble.

Instrumental dance and song traditions form a connected cross-border Basque landscape, including smaller towns and rural communities between the better-documented capitals. Repertoires vary within this world; broad cultural continuity should be visible without claiming identical practice on both sides of every valley. Overseas association networks are real, but the first map emphasizes this coherent regional heartland rather than a scattered inventory of individual performers.
