== Summary ==
São Luís is a musical region centred on the island city and neighbouring northern Maranhão communities. Reggae gives it an unusually recognizable popular identity, organized through radiolas, DJs, dance parties and local bands. The nickname ''Jamaica Brasileira'' refers to a sustained local appropriation of Jamaican music, rather than a claim that the two places have identical musical cultures. Museum director Ademar Danilo distinguishes roots, radiola and beach reggae circuits within the city itself.<ref name="sl-reggae-identity">[https://imirante.com/mirantefm/noticias/sao-luis/2026/05/13/ademar-danilo-destaca-legado-do-reggae-no-maranhao Ademar Danilo destaca legado do reggae no Maranhão], Mirante FM, 13 May 2026.</ref>

Alongside reggae, bumba-meu-boi, tambor de crioula and a varied June festival culture connect neighbourhoods with surrounding towns. Boi involves music, dance, theatre, costume making and religious obligations, with groups renewing material each year.<ref name="sl-boi">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/cultural-complex-of-bumba-meu-boi-from-maranhao-01510 Cultural Complex of Bumba-meu-boi from Maranhão], UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.</ref> Commercial forró and romantic popular music also enter these festive settings: the June 2026 Arraial da Cidade placed Boi da Maioba on a programme with Taty Girl and Seu Desejo.<ref name="sl-junho2026">[https://www.saoluis.ma.gov.br/portal/noticias/0/3/3648/arraial-da-cidade-espaco-de-valorizacao-da-cultura-e-geracao-de-renda/ Arraial da Cidade: espaço de valorização da cultura e geração de renda], Prefeitura de São Luís, 6 June 2026.</ref>

The September 2026 city anniversary provides a concrete picture of reggae's public presence. Radiolas and the bands Divino Roots and Filhos de Jah opened the celebration; Gugs appeared with Célia Sampaio, while Etana and Alpha Blondy brought Jamaican and Ivorian connections to the same event. This was an encounter across generations and countries, not simply a retrospective celebration of imported records.<ref name="sl-reggae2026">[https://www.saoluis.ma.gov.br/portal/noticias/0/3/3790/sao-luis-comeca-os-414-anos-com-palco-gigante-e-noite-de-muito-reggae São Luís começa os 414 anos com palco gigante e noite de muito reggae], Prefeitura de São Luís, 6 September 2026.</ref>

Current festival infrastructure supports several kinds of audience. In 2025 the Caminhos da Cultura programme distributed boi, tambor, cacuriá, coco, local song and forró among several historic-centre spaces, naming stages after respected practitioners.<ref name="sl-caminhos2025">[https://www.cultura.ma.gov.br/noticias/caminhos-da-cultura-a-ocupacao-no-centro-historico Caminhos da Cultura: a ocupação do Centro Histórico], Secretaria de Cultura do Maranhão, 2025.</ref> The 2026 June calendar likewise connected Praça Maria Aragão, the Feirinha and Praia Grande rather than concentrating all activity in one venue.<ref name="sl-accents">[https://www.saoluis.ma.gov.br/portal/noticias/0/3/3653/sao-joao-de-sao-luis-segue-com-programacao-diversificada-na-maria-aragao-feirinha-e-praia-grande-neste-fim-de-semana São João de São Luís segue com programação diversificada], Prefeitura de São Luís, 11 June 2026.</ref>

Religious popular music has a separate and visible public. The 2025 anniversary schedule followed its reggae celebration with a gospel night advertised with Forró de Crente, Isaías Saad, Anderson Freire, Nair Nany and Fernandinho. The juxtaposition illustrates a plural urban musical life; a city famous for reggae does not consist only of reggae listeners.<ref name="sl-gospel2025">[https://www.saoluis.ma.gov.br/portal/noticias/0/3/3366/prefeitura-inicia-celebracao-alusiva-aos-413-anos-de-sao-luis-com-festa-para-os-regueiros Prefeitura inicia celebração alusiva aos 413 anos de São Luís com festa para os regueiros], Prefeitura de São Luís, 6 September 2025.</ref>

== History ==
Reggae's arrival has several remembered explanations, involving recordings, travel and radio. Accounts that attribute everything to one ship or one broadcast obscure the subsequent labour of selectors, promoters and dancers. In an interview about that history, Ademar Danilo resisted a definitive arrival story while emphasizing the local practices that made the music meaningful. Close-couple dancing and locally assigned ''melô'' names became important parts of that transformation.<ref name="sl-reggae-arrival">[https://www.brasildefato.com.br/podcast/mosaico-cultural/2020/07/24/agarradinho-melos-e-radiola-o-misterio-supremo-da-chegada-do-reggae-no-maranhao Agarradinho, melôs, radiola e o mistério supremo da chegada do reggae no Maranhão], Brasil de Fato, 24 July 2020.</ref>

Live bands developed alongside record-based parties. Tribo de Jah's antecedent, Banda Cartaz, played a broad dance repertoire; several musicians had met through Maranhão's school for blind students. Fauzi Beydoun's involvement helped redirect the group toward reggae, and its later recordings travelled nationally. This history joins professional dance-band work, disability experience, broadcasting and roots-reggae identification rather than explaining the band solely through imitation of Jamaica.<ref name="sl-tribo">[https://dicionariompb.com.br/grupo/tribo-de-jah/ Tribo de Jah], Dicionário Cravo Albin.</ref>

Boi and tambor have separate, deeper community histories. Boi's annual sequence includes rehearsals, baptism, public performances and rituals marking the ox's death. UNESCO's 2019 inscription acknowledged this complex practice and its transmission; it did not create it.<ref name="sl-boi" /> Tambor de crioula is maintained through participation and oral learning in Black communities, with coreiras central to its dancing and continuity.<ref name="sl-tambor-social">[https://bcr.iphan.gov.br/bens-culturais/tambor-de-crioula-do-maranhao/ Tambor de crioula do Maranhão], IPHAN.</ref>

Radiola reggae is best approached as a relationship between selected recordings, large sound systems and a dancing public. The local ''agarradinho'' style brings partners close together, while ''melô'' names can attach local associations to a record beyond its original title.<ref name="sl-reggae-arrival" /> Roots-band concerts and beach circuits add other settings and expectations within the wider reggae scene.<ref name="sl-reggae-identity" />

Bumba-meu-boi's ''sotaques'', or accents, distinguish musical and performance approaches; the usual fivefold classification names matraca, zabumba, orquestra, baixada and costa de mão.<ref name="sl-boi" /> The distinction remains audible in live programming: the 2026 city schedule explicitly identified Morros as an orquestra group and Maioba as matraca.<ref name="sl-accents" /> The word ''boi'' therefore does not describe a single standardized beat.

Tambor de crioula combines solo and responding voices with a three-drum ensemble. Drum names vary, but small, medium and large instruments form a differentiated set; sticks struck on the large drum can add another layer. The ''punga'', or umbigada, is a choreographic exchange, and sung subjects range from saints and everyday events to praise, humour and challenge. Listening should attend to that dialogue between bodies, voices and percussion.<ref name="sl-tambor">[https://antigo.cnfcp.gov.br/tesauro/00001728.htm Tambor-de-crioula], Centro Nacional de Folclore e Cultura Popular.</ref>

== Artists ==
Célia Sampaio and Gugs offer two generational entry points into the contemporary reggae scene, while Tribo de Jah supplies a substantial recorded band history. Their different settings should be heard alongside the work of DJs and radiola crews, whose selection and presentation also constitute musical authorship.<ref name="sl-reggae2026" /><ref name="sl-tribo" />

Criolina, the partnership of Alê Muniz and Luciana Simões, offers a different synthesis. ''Radiola em Transe'' (2017) includes ''Compacto 76'', ''Jaracaty'' and ''Rocksteady de Bequimão a Cururupu''; its credited songwriters and place names locate the project within a regional imaginative world.<ref name="sl-criolina">[https://immub.org/album/radiola-em-transe Radiola em Transe], Instituto Memória Musical Brasileira.</ref> Aquiles Rique Reis's review describes reggae and rock meeting electronics, horns, guitars and keyboards.<ref name="sl-criolina-review">[https://jornalggn.com.br/musica/radiola-em-transe-um-cd-arrebatador-por-aquiles-rique-reis/ Radiola em transe, um CD arrebatador], Aquiles Rique Reis, Jornal GGN, 2017.</ref>

Humberto de Maracanã's work as composer, singer and community leader, Dona Teté's cacuriá legacy and Mestre Felipe's tambor practice represent other forms of artistic authority.<ref name="sl-caminhos2025" /> Alcione's performances connect the region with national samba and romantic song: her 2023 Arraial do Ipem appearance shared a programme with Cacuriá de Dona Teté and Boi de Maracanã.<ref name="sl-alcione">[https://www.cultura.ma.gov.br/noticias/50-anos-de-carreira-de-alcione-celebrados-com-show-no-arraial-do-ipem 50 anos de carreira de Alcione celebrados com show no Arraial do Ipem], Secretaria de Cultura do Maranhão, 2023.</ref>

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved boundary covers São Luís island and adjacent northern Maranhão coast and hinterland. It is broader than the municipal centre but does not designate all Maranhão as one listening region. The inland edge is an approximate editorial transition. Boi affiliations, reggae parties and musicians' routes cross it, and communities within it have different repertoires and religious histories.

The account combines institutional heritage descriptions, local practitioners' testimony, discography, criticism and dated event records. Programmes establish that particular acts and practices shared public space, not the musical preferences of every resident. Reggae's special local role is well supported, but no measured listener shares justify declaring it universally dominant. The regional frame is most useful for recognizing the relationship among city, island, coastal communities and wider Caribbean and Brazilian circulation.
