== Summary ==
Greater Recife is a coastal metropolitan music region centred on Recife and Olinda, with connections to nearby Pernambuco towns. Brega and brega-funk occupy important contemporary public spaces alongside forró, frevo, maracatu and other repertoires. The 2025 Recife Capital do Brega festival brought romantic singers, bands and MCs together at Marco Zero, demonstrating a local musical field broader than one electronic dance style.<ref name="br-brega2025">[https://recentro.recife.pe.gov.br/recife-capital-do-brega/ Recife Capital do Brega], Prefeitura do Recife / Recentro.</ref>

The region is also distinguished by the institutions sustaining carnival music. Frevo associations transmit instrumental and dance knowledge; maracatu nações maintain rehearsal, religious and communal practices beyond the parade itself. The spectacular public event is therefore only one expression of a year-round musical infrastructure.<ref name="br-recife-frevo">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/frevo-performing-arts-of-the-carnival-of-recife-00603?lang=en Frevo, performing arts of the Carnival of Recife], UNESCO.</ref><ref name="br-maracatu-nacao">[https://bcr.iphan.gov.br/bens-culturais/maracatu-nacao/ Maracatu nação], IPHAN / Bem Brasileiro.</ref>

The 2025 Capital do Brega event included Michelle Melo, Anderson Neiff, MC Tróia, Conde Só Brega and Labaredas. Recife’s carnival opening that year likewise moved from the Tumaraca meeting of maracatu nações to Marron Brasileiro, Ney Matogrosso and romantic brega singer Raphaela Santos. These programmes show different audiences and repertoires sharing major civic stages.<ref name="br-brega2025" /><ref name="br-recife-open2025">[https://www2.recife.pe.gov.br/noticias/28/02/2025/recife-ferve-ao-som-de-tumaraca-marron-brasileiro-ney-matogrosso-e-raphaela Recife ferve ao som de Tumaraca, Marron Brasileiro, Ney Matogrosso e Raphaela Santos na abertura do Carnaval 2025], Prefeitura do Recife.</ref>

Music was distributed across neighbourhoods as well as the historic centre. The announced 2025 carnival stages included Alto José do Pinho, Bomba do Hemetério, Ibura, Brasília Teimosa and Várzea; Várzea’s bill brought together Karina Buhr, Siba e a Fuloresta, Nação Zumbi and other artists.<ref name="br-recife-neighbourhoods">[https://www2.recife.pe.gov.br/noticias/25/02/2025/prefeitura-do-recife-tera-mais-de-230-shows-e-apresentacoes-em-programacao Prefeitura do Recife terá mais de 230 shows e apresentações em programação completa dos 12 polos descentralizados e no Novo Cais], Prefeitura do Recife.</ref>

Dance continues to carry local production beyond Recife. July 2026 reporting followed Jamal, Romero Silva Oliveira Junior, whose passinho emerged from brega-funk dance gatherings and circulated into online and football celebrations. This makes a dancer’s authorship part of the musical story.<ref name="br-jamal2026">[https://midias.diariodepernambuco.com.br/viver/2026/07/11718100-do-recife-a-copa-do-mundo-criador-do-passinho-do-jamal-celebra-sucesso-e-busca-mais-reconhecimento.html Do Recife à Copa do Mundo: Criador do Passinho do Jamal celebra sucesso e busca mais reconhecimento], Diario de Pernambuco.</ref> Duda Beat’s advertised 2026 ''Acústico e Tal'' appearance provided another current format, revisiting ''tara & tal'' through a changed performance setting.<ref name="br-duda2026">[https://conecta.recife.pe.gov.br/evento/4552 Duda Beat: RioMar Encontros 2026], Conecta Recife / event organizer.</ref>

== History ==
Frevo grew from Recife’s urban band culture, drawing on marches, polkas and related repertories, while its ''passo'' developed through the movements and agility associated with capoeira. Carnival associations gave these practices durable social homes.<ref name="br-recife-frevo" /> Beyond the city, maracatu de baque solto is closely tied to the workers and cultural life of Pernambuco’s northern sugar-growing Zona da Mata. Its relationship to the metropolitan area should not obscure that particular rural history.<ref name="br-maracatu-solto">[https://bcr.iphan.gov.br/bens-culturais/maracatu-baque-solto/ Maracatu de baque solto], IPHAN / Bem Brasileiro.</ref>

Reginaldo Rossi’s career shows a different route. He began in Recife clubs in the 1960s, drawing on the Beatles and Jovem Guarda, before becoming identified with romantic brega. “Garçom”, recorded in 1987, acquired wider southern Brazilian success later. The sequence demonstrates that local and national recognition need not occur simultaneously.<ref name="br-rossi">[https://dicionariompb.com.br/artista/reginaldo-rossi/ Reginaldo Rossi], Dicionário Cravo Albin da Música Popular Brasileira.</ref>

Manguebeat offered another influential synthesis. The municipal museum’s account places Nação Zumbi’s formation in 1991 through a connection with Lamento Negro, combining maracatu, rock, rap, Afrobeat and electronic influences. The 1994 ''Da Lama ao Caos'' became a major recorded reference.<ref name="br-mangue-history">[https://www2.recife.pe.gov.br/noticias/15/01/2016/museu-da-cidade-do-recife-abre-exposicao-em-homenagem-chico-science Museu da Cidade do Recife abre exposição em homenagem a Chico Science], Prefeitura do Recife.</ref><ref name="br-mangue-album">[https://conecta.recife.pe.gov.br/evento/2307 Circo Science: Do Mangue ao Picadeiro], Prefeitura do Recife / Conecta.</ref> Brega-funk subsequently developed through local production experiments; the 2018 success of MC Loma e as Gêmeas Lacração’s “Envolvimento” widened attention to an already-existing scene.<ref name="br-bregafunk-production">[https://jc.uol.com.br/cultura/2023/11/15638006-brega-funk-um-ritmo-mutante-entenda-transformacoes-e-desafios-do-genero.html Brega-funk, um ritmo mutante: entenda transformações e desafios do gênero], Jornal do Commercio / Emannuel Bento.</ref>

== Genres ==
Frevo contains audible internal distinctions. ''Frevo de rua'' is instrumental, emphasizing brass and woodwinds over percussion; ''frevo canção'' introduces a singer with a related orchestral sound. ''Frevo de bloco'' foregrounds a different combination of strings and woodwinds with choral singing, often on nostalgic or lyrical subjects. Treating all three as simply fast brass music would miss much of the repertoire.<ref name="br-frevo-types">[https://artsandculture.google.com/story/mAXxPtU4UJ9vKQ?hl=pt-BR Tipos de Frevo], Paço do Frevo / Google Arts & Culture.</ref>

Maracatu nação’s ''baque virado'' uses alfaias, gonguê, snare-like drums and shakers in a collective percussion texture. Its community and religious life is not interchangeable with a concert band borrowing maracatu rhythms.<ref name="br-maracatu-nacao" /> Baque solto has its own worker-community history and emphasis on poetic performance.<ref name="br-maracatu-solto" />

Brega-funk’s arrangement is continually revised. Producers interviewed in 2023 describe accelerating romantic brega, substituting electronic drum kits, using synthesizers and later adapting textures to passinho. Metallic repeated sounds, changing percussion accents and processed voices became tools for choreography. The direction of influence runs both ways: dancers respond to tracks, and producers compose with dancers’ movements in mind.<ref name="br-bregafunk-production" /> Ciranda supplies another coastal social form, represented by Lia de Itamaracá’s circle-dance practice in Itamaracá, Recife and Olinda.<ref name="br-lia">[https://www.cultura.pe.gov.br/pagina/patrimonio-cultural/imaterial/patrimonios-vivos/lia-de-itamaraca/ Lia de Itamaracá], Secretaria de Cultura de Pernambuco.</ref>

Reginaldo Rossi’s “Garçom” and “A raposa e as uvas” are entry points into the region’s romantic song culture.<ref name="br-rossi" /> Michelle Melo, Conde Só Brega and Labaredas connect that broader brega field to current public programming, while Anderson Neiff and MC Tróia illustrate its contemporary MC-led spectrum.<ref name="br-brega2025" />

Producers should also be named. Dany Bala, Marley no Beat and John Johnis appear in local reporting as makers actively revising brega-funk’s sound; their studio decisions are part of the scene’s authorship, alongside singers and dancers.<ref name="br-bregafunk-production" /> Chico Science and Nação Zumbi remain important through records and public memory: Recife’s September 2026 mural and music-history route marked Science’s sixtieth birth anniversary.<ref name="br-chico2026">[https://www2.recife.pe.gov.br/noticias/18/09/2026/recife-celebra-os-60-anos-de-chico-science-com-instalacao-de-mega-mural-e Recife celebra os 60 anos de Chico Science com instalação de mega mural e passeio turístico temático], Prefeitura do Recife.</ref>

Lia de Itamaracá brings attention to the northern coast and to the cultural space she established in Jaguaribe.<ref name="br-lia" /> Frevo listeners can compare Orquestra Frevo Essência, Coral Edgard Moraes and Claudionor Germano through the examples curated by Paço do Frevo. Those examples foreground the distinction between instrumental orchestra, chorus and individual interpreter.<ref name="br-frevo-types" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved polygon includes the Recife metropolitan core and nearby coastal towns of Pernambuco, extending north and south of the city and inland toward adjacent cultural circuits. It is broader than a municipal boundary and does not attempt to reproduce the official metropolitan-region membership exactly. Itamaracá and Olinda are important to the article’s coastal connections.

The outline overlaps Forró Northeast and uses an approximate inland transition. It is an editor-authored visual synthesis, not a surveyed audience boundary. Baque-solto connections extend into the Zona da Mata; brega-funk studios and carnival associations have much finer neighbourhood geographies than this map can display. Festival lineups establish actual coexistence, while heritage and specialist reporting explain particular practices. None is used as a census of all residents’ preferences.
