== Summary ==
The Argentine Northwest brings together several related but distinct musical landscapes: the Andean highlands and valleys, Salta and Tucumán's urban performance circuits, La Rioja and Catamarca's song traditions, and Santiago del Estero's chacarera and tropical dance music. Folklore is an important shared public language, but it includes different dances, vocal techniques and social occasions. The national CIMAP teaching programme itself distinguishes northwestern repertories from those of the altiplano.<ref name="curriculum">[https://www.argentina.gob.ar/sites/default/files/2023/02/plan_de_estudios_2023.pdf CIMAP — Creadores e Intérpretes de la Música Argentina Popular, plan de estudios 2023], Secretaría de Cultura / CIMAP.</ref>

Chacarera has a particularly strong association with Santiago del Estero, where its singing, dancing and instrumental practice extend through family gatherings, peñas and festivals. Canto con caja offers another organizing principle: singers accompany themselves with a small drum and exchange repertories through community gatherings as well as concerts. These practices overlap geographically without becoming interchangeable.<ref name="chacarera">[https://www.argentina.gob.ar/node/470278 Chacarera — intangible cultural heritage inventory (12 March 2025)], Secretaría de Cultura / Ateneo 10 de Diciembre.</ref><ref name="caja">[https://www.fonotecainamu.musica.ar/Welcome/genero?catalog=2&genero=27 Encuentro del Canto Ancestral con Caja en El Shinkal], Andrea Mamondes / INAMU.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
The advertised programme for the 52nd Serenata a Cafayate in February 2026 included Chaqueño Palavecino, Las Voces de Orán, Los Nocheros, Ahyre, Sergio Galleguillo, Los Tekis and Canto 4. Such a festival connects local audiences, touring artists and visitors around an explicitly valley-based identity. Its lineup is evidence of public circulation, not a measurement of what every resident prefers.<ref name="serenata">[https://www.salta.gob.ar/prensa/noticias/la-musica-y-la-identidad-vallista-vuelven-a-encontrarse-en-la-serenata-a-cafayate-106056 La música y la identidad vallista vuelven a encontrarse en la Serenata a Cafayate (3 February 2026)], Gobierno de Salta.</ref>

Smaller commemorative events reveal another level of musical life. Cafayate's February 2026 tribute to Melania Pérez brought together performers including Jacinta Condori, Causio Guantay and Mora Rodríguez. The programme emphasized reinterpreting a singer's repertory across generations.<ref name="melania">[https://www.salta.gob.ar/prensa/noticias/cafayate-homenaje-a-melania-perez-en-el-museo-de-la-vid-y-el-vino-106372 Cafayate: homenaje a Melania Pérez (23 February 2026)], Gobierno de Salta.</ref>

Urban rock belongs in the regional picture too. In May 2026, Karma Sudaca singer Tony Molteni discussed the Tucumán band's thirty-year history and a Teatro San Martín anniversary programme revisiting its discography. This ongoing local career challenges any picture of the northwest as exclusively an acoustic folklore region.<ref name="karma">[https://www.eltucumano.com/noticia/libre/320709/no-somos-banda-somos-hermanos-tony-molteni-30-anos-karma-sudaca.html Tony Molteni y los 30 años de Karma Sudaca (27 May 2026)], FM La Tucumana / El Tucumano.</ref>

== History ==
Archives document named performers rather than an anonymous, timeless folk past. The Instituto Nacional de Musicología Carlos Vega preserves a 1945 field recording of Eugenio Giménez singing and playing guitar in a chacarera recorded at Añatuya. The catalogue identifies Carlos Vega and Silvia Eisenstein as collectors. One recording cannot establish the genre's origin, but it anchors musical history in a specific performance and research encounter.<ref name="archive">[https://coleccion.inmcv.gob.ar/index.php/Detail/objects/5061 Chacarera — AR-INM-F001INM-SCT-RS-4571], Instituto Nacional de Musicología Carlos Vega.</ref>

Leda Valladares, from Tucumán, expanded the public visibility of canto con caja through collecting, documentary records, teaching and collaborations. Her ''Mapa Musical Argentino'' recordings circulated during the 1960s and early 1970s, and later musicians have described their influence beyond the usual folklore audience.<ref name="leda">[https://www.cultura.gob.ar/leda-valladares-la-recopiladora-de-la-memoria-y-el-sonido-ancestral-9915/ Leda Valladares, guardiana de nuestras memorias sonoras (17 December 2020)], Ministerio de Cultura.</ref>

Mercedes Sosa's career illustrates another route out of the region. Born in San Miguel de Tucumán, she participated in Mendoza's Nuevo Cancionero movement and reached national prominence at Cosquín in 1965. Her later repertory crossed folklore, rock, tango and popular song. Regional belonging therefore coexists with several other musical homes.<ref name="sosa">[https://www.argentina.gob.ar/noticias/mercedes-sosa-una-voz-que-permanece Mercedes Sosa, una voz que permanece (4 October 2026)], Secretaría de Cultura.</ref>

== Genres ==
Chacarera commonly joins guitar and bombo with singing and dancing; violin or accordion can enrich the ensemble. Zamba, gato, escondido and vidala belong to related but differentiated repertories. In higher Andean settings, carnavalito, bailecito and other forms have distinct performance histories. Grouping them for navigation should not erase their rhythmic or social differences.<ref name="chacarera" /><ref name="curriculum" />

Bagualas, vidalas and chayas can enter the broad field of canto con caja. INAMU's account of the 2023 El Shinkal gathering in Catamarca describes soloists, groups, comparsas and coplera formations, combining inherited practice with newly created verses and aesthetic choices. La Rioja's Chaya also encompasses neighbourhood celebration, coplas and vidalas, alongside the large commercial festival.<ref name="caja" /><ref name="chaya">[https://www.argentina.gob.ar/node/487868 Vivir la Chaya], Argentina travel/culture portal.</ref>

Guaracha santiagueña is an essential tropical counterpart. Provincial educational material, drawing on performers' accounts, describes relationships with local folklore and the addition of percussion associated with cumbia, merengue and other Latin American dance music. Its local development should be investigated on its own terms, rather than inferred from other genres elsewhere that share the word guaracha.<ref name="guaracha">[https://www.meducacionsantiago.gob.ar/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Propuesta_Pedagogica_Ciclo-orientado_MECyT_2da-Edicion-MH.pdf La guaracha santiagueña — Propuesta pedagógica, ciclo orientado, second edition (2020)], Ministerio de Educación, Ciencia y Tecnología de Santiago del Estero.</ref>

Mercedes Sosa and Leda Valladares provide complementary listening routes into interpretation and documentation. Maryta de Humahuaca offers another connection between contemporary performance and northwestern repertory: her presentation at the Argentine embassy in Washington included baguala, zamba, chacarera and huayno, placing regional forms within an international concert setting.<ref name="sosa" /><ref name="leda" /><ref name="maryta">[https://eeeuu.cancilleria.gob.ar/es/node/48620 Maryta de Humahuaca canta música folclórica del noroeste], Embajada Argentina en Estados Unidos.</ref>

Community specialists also deserve individual recognition. The documentary ''Voces Ancestrales'' brings together Josefina Aragón, René Machaca and Aniceto Gainza, whose experience comes from different parts of Jujuy. Their discussion concerns both the history and everyday practice of coplas.<ref name="masters">[https://museorojas.cultura.gob.ar/actividad/voces-ancestrales-encuentro-de-maestros-del-canto-con-caja/ Voces Ancestrales: Encuentro de Maestros del Canto con Caja], Museo Casa de Ricardo Rojas.</ref>

The Cafayate performers and Karma Sudaca indicate the range of professional routes. No short artist list can substitute for the less visible singers, dancers, instrument makers and organizers who transmit these practices through local relationships.<ref name="serenata" /><ref name="karma" /><ref name="caja" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved footprint comprises Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, La Rioja and Santiago del Estero. These provincial edges are practical map boundaries. They contain highlands, valleys, cities and lowlands with different musical experiences, and do not define an ethnic territory or one homogeneous folklore tradition.

Cross-border and internal connections remain fundamental. Research on Chané vocal repertories in northwestern Argentina, for example, documents Indigenous-language songs and particular ceremonial and social contexts that a generic Andean label would obscure. Meanwhile, the El Shinkal gathering drew participants from provinces well beyond this polygon. The region is best understood as several connected centres of practice, with migration, touring and community relationships extending their reach.<ref name="chane">[https://ri.conicet.gov.ar/bitstream/handle/11336/278729/CONICET_Digital_Nro.56681c03-8793-4b3e-b368-b286e80a34b1_B.pdf?isAllowed=y&sequence=2 Study of Chané vocal repertories — DOI 10.31048/104gpg30], Agustina Morando / Museo de Antropología, CONICET.</ref><ref name="caja" />
